God has created all things for his glory. When people pray they come before God and ask for things and plead that God might be glorified in their lives. The essence of prayer is humility. God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble (James 4.6; 1 Peter 5.5). Therefore, Third Avenue desire to be a praying people.

Jesus told us to be a praying people. We pray for laborers to be sent out into the harvest to reap souls (Mt 9.38). We pray for our enemies (Mt 5.44). We pray that we might not give in to temptation (Mk 14.38).We pray for his kingdom to come on earth as it is in heaven (Lk 11.2). Paul prayed for the Colossians in order that they might have knowledge, all spiritual wisdom, and understanding (Col 1.9). He encouraged the Thessalonians to pray “that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored” (2Th 3.1). And finally: To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by his power (2Th. 1.11).

Yes, prayer should be done in private between a person and God. However, times of corporate prayer show that a people desire the same things. Corporate prayer stirs us up to love and good works. Corporate prayer gives us the opportunity to minister to each other. The early church gathered together to pray and we continue that as a body of believers.
